Stewardship is a big word. It's not just long, but for a Christian the word ‘stewardship’ is about what it means to live as a follower of Jesus Christ. If we are followers of Jesus, what do we do? How do we spend our time? How do we treat others? How do we spend our money? What do we understand our purpose in life to be? Those are stewardship questions.
We worship a generous God. Any and all giving we do is a response to God's grace.
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never
come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your
faithfulness. Lam 3:22-23
What do you have that you did not receive? II Cor 4:7
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though
he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by
his poverty might become rich. II Cor 8:9
We love because he first loved us. I Jn 4:19
As we follow Jesus, we learn that he desires us to be generous as well – that is, to live with open hearts and open hands.
You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way….
II Cor 9:11
A longtime motto of CPC is this: Knowing, Loving, Serving Jesus Christ.
Serving the Lord involves faithful use of the time, talents, and various resources he has graciously given us. We seek to honor him and advance his kingdom and minister to others. When we give to his work, both in our local churches and in support of other good ministries, we serve both Jesus and other people.
Truly I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these,
you did it to me. Mt 25:40
Faithfulness in matters of stewardship requires thought and prayer. We want to be intentional. Some things we do not want to characterize our giving include: haphazard, sporadic, meager, what’s left. Some things we do want to characterize our giving include: regular, off-the-top, as we’ve received, generous.
On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something
aside and store it up, as he may prosper…. II Cor 16:2
In an amazing passage, the Apostle Paul writes about both the generosity and the hearts of believers in Macedonia:
For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and
beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly
for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints – and this
not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the
Lord…. II Cor 8:3-5
WE LOVE ~ because Jesus first loved us.
WE SERVE ~ because the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve.
WE GIVE ~ because he gave, and gives, himself freely to us.
