A Legacy of Great Vision

Everyone leaves a legacy. We all inherit the legacy of our predecessors and only borrow today from our children. At Central Presbyterian, we understand that where we are going is shaped greatly by where we have been. We greatly respect the legacy left for us while looking to the one we will leave behind. Our story begins with many visions becoming one and driving us forward into the future that only God can deliver to his faithful followers.

Love the Lord your God with all of your heart, and with all of your soul, and with all of your strength. The commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children.

Deuteronomy 6:5-7a

Where We’ve Been

The founding of Central Presbyterian Church in Merced really begins with the history of three separate Presbyterian churches: Mariposa Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Merced and Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

October 25, 1912 marks the official organization of Central Presbyterian Church. Pastor Morre of Cumberland Presbyterian Church and Pastor McCullough of First Presbyterian Church oversaw the union of the churches and on October 12, 1913, Dr. Henry T. Babcock was called as the first pastor of Central Presbyterian Church.

Central Presbyterian Church has always been a staple of the Merced community. Many of the buildings still in use today have hosted events such as graduation ceremonies and musical productions.

Where We’re Going

Our church has been at the center of community-building in Merced for over 100 years and we intend to continue in that tradition.

The founding members of the church had a vision for knowing, loving and serving Jesus Christ by knowing, loving, and serving the people of Merced. In the same way, we continue to reach into our community today with the same passion for demonstrating Christ’s love to others and preaching the Gospel.

We look forward to the next one-hundred years of mentoring youth, aiding the poor, and assisting the elderly in order that they become true disciples of Jesus who trust Him in every aspect of life!
